Your Guide to the 2025 Medicare Changes

Beginning this year in 2025, there are seven big changes to Medicare that you need to be aware of.

Medicare changes can feel confusing, but several of the 2025 updates are good news for people who take prescription medicines. Here is a plain look at some of the changes, and how to make sure they work for you.

A yearly cap on drug costs

One of the biggest changes is a yearly limit on what people with Medicare Part D pay out of pocket for covered prescription drugs. Once you reach that limit, you should not pay more for covered drugs for the rest of the year. This can make a big difference for people who take costly medicines.

Along with this, the coverage gap that many people called the donut hole is gone in 2025.

Spreading out your costs

There is also a new option called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. Instead of paying large amounts at the pharmacy all at once, you can choose to spread your costs into monthly payments through the year. It does not lower your total cost, but it can make budgeting easier. You sign up through your Part D or Medicare Advantage plan.

The best Medicare plan is the one that covers the medicines you actually take.

Other things to know

Some changes that started in earlier years continue. Covered insulin has a monthly cost limit for people with Medicare, and many recommended adult vaccines are covered at no cost under Part D. Because rules can update, check the official Medicare website or call Medicare to confirm details for your situation.

A few smart steps each year:

  • Review your plan during open enrollment every fall.
  • Make a list of every medicine you take before comparing plans.
  • Check that your pharmacy is in network.
  • Ask whether a payment plan would help your budget.
  • Keep your Medicare and plan cards with you when you fill prescriptions.

How we can help

Our team can help you understand how your prescriptions are covered and answer questions about costs at the counter. We are a bilingual team, so you can ask in English or Spanish. If you are switching plans, we can also help make sure your prescriptions move smoothly.

If you help an older parent or relative with their care, these changes may affect them too. Sit down together before open enrollment, gather their medicine list and plan materials, and compare options. Medicare also offers free counseling through its State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which in California is called HICAP. It can be a helpful, unbiased place to get answers about your choices.
