4 Tips for Healthy Aging

Older adults need to pay closer attention to their health to help them live a happy, healthy, independent life.

Healthy aging is about staying active, independent and connected for as long as possible. You do not need a complicated plan. Small habits, kept up over time, make a real difference. Here are four places to start.

1. Keep moving

Regular activity supports your heart, muscles, bones, balance and mood. Walking, swimming, gardening, dancing and chair exercises all count. Strength and balance work can help lower the risk of falls. Start where you are and build slowly. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

2. Eat well and stay hydrated

Choose a colorful plate with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and lean proteins. Older adults may feel less thirsty, so drink water through the day, especially in our dry climate. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting vitamins or supplements, since some interact with medicines.

It is never too late to start a healthy habit.

3. Stay on top of your medicines

Many older adults take several medicines. Each new prescription adds a chance for interactions or side effects. A few habits help:

  • Keep an updated list of everything you take and bring it to every visit.
  • Use one pharmacy so your pharmacist sees the whole picture.
  • Ask for a medication review at least once a year.
  • Try Med Packs, where doses are sorted by day and time.
  • Sync your refills so everything is ready on the same date.
  • Tell us about dizziness, confusion or new falls right away.

Staying up to date on recommended vaccines is part of this too. Ask us which ones are right for you, such as flu, shingles and pneumonia.

4. Stay connected

Friendship and purpose matter for health. Call a friend, join a class, volunteer, or spend time with family. Keep your mind busy with reading, puzzles or learning something new. Get regular checkups, including vision and hearing, since both affect safety and connection.

At CarePoint, we know many of our patients by name. We offer free delivery anywhere in California, medication reviews, and a team that takes the time to talk. We are honored to be part of your care.

Make your home safer, too. Good lighting, grab bars in the bathroom, secured rugs, and clear walkways can help prevent falls. Keep a list of medicines and emergency contacts somewhere easy to find. If getting to the pharmacy is hard, let us know. We can sync refills, prepare Med Packs and deliver to your door so you can stay independent at home.
